Ponta Delgada is São Miguel’s healthcare anchor. Register with the SNS after residence for your Número de Utente; public and private care exist on the island, but complex cases can mean inter-island or mainland referral. Medicare does not pay for routine or planned care in Portugal, and travel time is part of the healthcare plan.
Climate, honestly
Humid Atlantic weather that can turn in a day: rain, wind, cloud and sun in rotation. The island is green because it is wet. Homes need ventilation, damp checks and heating or dehumidification more than a postcard suggests.
Getting around — and back to the US
A car is practical for much of São Miguel, while Ponta Delgada itself is compact. João Paulo II Airport links the island to Lisbon, Porto and other islands.
