Funchal offers island services in a mild Atlantic climate: a capital with hospitals, shops, buses and an established foreign-resident presence, wrapped in steep green hills and sea views.
Who should skip it
Skip Funchal if island logistics would frustrate you. Some goods, specialists and family trips depend on flights or shipping, slopes are unavoidable, and Madeira’s regional minimum-wage figure must be checked before island D7 math is treated as final.

Healthcare access
Funchal is Madeira’s healthcare centre, with SNS registration after residence and public and private services concentrated in the capital. More specialised problems can still mean a mainland referral. Family-doctor assignment and private-insurance underwriting need local confirmation; Medicare does not pay for routine or planned care in Portugal.
Climate, honestly
Mild is the headline, microclimate is the fine print. Funchal’s south-facing amphitheatre is sunnier than the north coast, but rain, cloud and wind vary by altitude and exposure. Choose the hillside for the weather you will actually live in.
Getting around — and back to the US
Buses and taxis handle much of Funchal, but gradients make a car tempting and tiring at the same time. Madeira Airport links the island to Lisbon and Europe; seasonal long-haul schedules have been reported, including summer U.S. service, but operating dates must be confirmed before you rely on them.
Expat life & English
An established foreign-resident and returning-emigrant community, with English common in tourism-facing Funchal. Outside the capital and in ordinary paperwork, Portuguese carries the day.
Family, pets and money
Verify school places and transport by age band on the island rather than importing mainland assumptions. For pets, flight routing, carrier rules and heat timing matter alongside the standard microchip, rabies, USDA-endorsed certificate and DGAV sequence. Banking and NIF are routine in Funchal, but island residents should keep mainland travel and specialist trips in the annual budget.
