Settled OverseasSomeday Doesn’t Have to Become Never.
Caribbean coast · the historic walled city — hot and humid year-round, with dated asking samples in El Laguito and Bocagrande
Households who want the Caribbean at city scale: a historic walled centre, a real urban economy behind the visitor layer, and the two dated asking samples below from the districts movers actually land in — El Laguito and Bocagrande. It is Colombia’s best-known coastal destination, and the research treats it as a place to live deliberately, not a resort to drift into.
Skip Cartagena if heat and humidity are a health issue — the coast is hot and humid year-round, and air-conditioning is a housing criterion, not an amenity. Also skip it if your plan depends on a verified ordinary long-term rental agent: the contacts pass found none for Cartagena (the captured supply is luxury- and vacation-led) — that part of the move is a printed GAP here.
Not moving on a pension? There are other routes. The country page separates them — pension, passive income, remote work, family, and long stays — with their limits. Anything unverified is marked as a gap.
The gap we print as a gap: two large-format asking listings in the beachfront districts anchor the order of magnitude — not a Cartagena median and not a couple budget. The research also found no ordinary 12-month tenant-side rental helper here, so the lease homework (total cost with administración, deposit, early exit, a contract usable for address proof) is yours to pin down in writing.
Figures: Settled Overseas Colombia official-capture pass, 8 October 2026. Dollar figures at the TRM of COP 3,238.88 = US$1 (8 Oct 2026). Anything not verified is printed as a gap.
Expect primary care locally and travel to a metro referral centre for complex care — Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, Bucaramanga and Barranquilla are the recurring referral centres in the country research. Named-hospital verification for Cartagena was not captured (GAP), so no hospital names or depth claims print. The frame: Medicare pays $0 in Colombia; M Pensionado holders comply through the private all-risk policy (EPS affiliation is barred on that route); other M/R residents affiliate via the cédula de extranjería and the SAT.
Hot and humid year-round on the Caribbean coast — the country research states it in one line and so do we. Housing choice (shade, airflow, air-conditioning quality and its electricity cost) is a health decision at 65+, and a lease signed without it is a summer surprise you chose.
GAP: our captured sources do not print Cartagena transport or U.S.-flight specifics. One health-geography line the sources do carry: WHO lists Cartagena among the cities for which yellow-fever vaccination is generally not recommended for itinerary-limited trips — a recommendation map, not an entry rule (the entry rules are on the country page).
The visitor economy is the loudest in Colombia, which is not the same as a resident expat infrastructure: the contacts pass captured luxury and vacation-led rental supply here, not an ordinary long-term tenant market in English. Daily life runs in Spanish; the country’s English-official territory is San Andrés and Providencia.
The walled Caribbean city Colombia shows the world — and, behind the postcard, a working port city where a resident’s life is built in specific neighbourhoods, on written leases, with the coast’s heat planned for rather than discovered.

This page is education, built from public sources checked on the dates shown (Settled Overseas Colombia fact spine, official-capture pass and contacts shortlist, 8 October 2026). It is not legal, tax, or medical advice; visa outcomes and underwriting stay with Cancillería, insurers, and your own licensed advisors. Asking rents are individual dated listings, not medians or budgets; anything we could not verify is printed as a gap.
