Settled OverseasSomeday Doesn’t Have to Become Never.
North coast · city-proper 2-bed RD$15,000–30,500/mo (≈US$247–503) — FazWaz sample, Oct 2026
Three towns, one corridor. Puerto Plata city has the port, the malecón, and the region's hospital. Sosúa is the established retiree enclave — Canadian, German, and American — and Cabarete runs on wind: kitesurfing by day, beach bars by night. It fits retirees who want North American company and beach life, with a hospital within a half hour.
Skip the corridor if resort-priced expat rentals annoy you: the cheaper local-peso tier lives in Puerto Plata city proper, not in the enclave towns.
Not moving on a pension? There are other routes. The country page separates them — pension, passive income, remote work, family, and long stays — with their limits. Anything unverified is marked as a gap.
Figures: Settled Overseas cost snapshots dated 6 Oct 2026. The corridor is two markets — city-proper local tier (RD$, 1-year minimums) and the Sosúa–Cabarete expat corridor (USD, furnished) — printed separately, never blended. RD$60.61/US$1; EUR→USD approximate.
The national frame: Medicare pays $0 for care in the Dominican Republic (Medicare.gov, fetched 6 Oct 2026), so residents run on Dominican (ARS) or international plans — and no official price table is pinned anywhere, so confirm any plan's terms in writing. Centro Médico Bournigal in Puerto Plata, verified on its own site 6 Oct 2026 — 24-hour emergency, ICU, surgery, CT/MRI imaging, 30+ specialties, and an international desk working in Spanish, English, German and French — sits 25–30 minutes from Sosúa and Cabarete. Cabarete Medical Center (directory listing) covers the east end; Hospital Ricardo Limardo is the public anchor.
North-coast trade-wind belt: the 'Christmas winds' bring rougher winter surf to Cabarete — the same wind that makes it a kitesurfing town (general frame).
Gregorio Luperón (POP), Puerto Plata's airport, carries US nonstops — JFK and Miami appear in Oct 2026 schedules. The corridor towns string along one coastal road, with Bournigal at the west end as the care anchor.
An established Canadian, German and American retiree presence across Puerto Plata and the Sosúa/Cabarete corridor (guide label); Sosúa even has an English-speaking church on the highway. Daily life gets more Spanish the further you live from the enclave core.
Puerto Plata's cable car climbs Mount Isabel de Torres to a Christ statue over the Atlantic. Down the coast, Cabarete's bay is a world-circuit stop for kiteboarding.
