Settled OverseasSomeday Doesn’t Have to Become Never.
Jalisco · Couple budget ≈ US$1,900–2,500/mo (fact spine, read 7 Oct 2026)
Mild highland weather at ~5,000 ft, a walkable lakeside core, and Guadalajara's hospital depth 45–60 minutes away — with one of Mexico's oldest US/Canadian retiree communities under it. It fits couples who want company, English around them, and spring-like days.
Skip it if a state-level 'Reconsider Travel' label would worry your family or your insurer: Jalisco is Level 3 in the 29 May 2026 advisory reissue (as reported). We print that; we don't bury it.
Not moving on a pension? There are other routes. The country page separates them — pension, passive income, remote work, family, and long stays — with their limits. Anything unverified is marked as a gap.
Figures: Settled Overseas Mexico fact spine (read 7 Oct 2026): Numbeo Ajijic (Jun 2026); Chapala.com FAQ; LiveAndInvest Ajijic table. Planning ranges; Numbeo sample sizes are small.
Medicare pays $0 in Mexico (Medicare.gov summaries, read 7 Oct 2026); IMSS voluntary cover costs MXN 20,600/yr at ages 60–69 and MXN 21,500 at 70–79 (2026); private cover broadly runs US$2,000–6,000+ per person per year with a reported 20–40% rise in 2026 — and the per-age price table for ages 60–75 remains a printed gap, no insurer-issued table verified yet. Ajijic itself has clinics, GPs and pharmacies only: the care plan is Guadalajara, 45–60 minutes away — the deepest bench in the west (Hospital San Javier, Hospital Ángeles, Puerta de Hierro, university hospitals). Retirees here plan surgery, cardiac and neuro care around that drive.
Highland refuge: spring-like temperatures at ~5,000 ft, a rainy season roughly June–September/October, minimal hurricane exposure, and little or no AC or heating in many homes.
Ajijic's core is walkable; the corridor runs on the lakeside highway to Chapala town and up to Guadalajara — whose airport (GDL) is widening its US nonstops (new routes announced for late 2026; checked Oct 2026). Budget a car, or a steady taxi/DiDi line, for hospital and airport runs.
One of Mexico's oldest North American retiree communities — old enough to support its own relocation tours and English-language lakeside media (Chapala.com; Jerry Brown Travels, read Oct 2026). English is common lakeside; the state runs in Spanish.
The Chapala–Ajijic corridor has hosted North American retirees for decades — long enough that its relocation guides, tour operators and English-language cost tables are an industry of their own (Chapala.com; LiveAndInvest Ajijic hub, read Oct 2026).

This page is education, built from public sources checked on the dates shown. It is not legal, tax, or medical advice; residency outcomes and underwriting stay with the Mexican consulates and the INM, insurers, and your own licensed advisors. Figures marked with a directory or broker name were read from that source; anything we could not verify is printed as a gap.
