Oaxaca City

Oaxaca · Couple budget ≈ US$1,800–2,500/mo · altitude 5,100 ft (1,550 m)

Who picks it — and why

A market-first food culture, a walkable colonial centro at 5,100 ft, and engaged-local-life budgets at the low end of this page (US$1,800–2,500). It fits couples who want to live in Mexico — in Spanish, in the markets, at altitude — rather than beside an enclave.

Who should skip it

Skip it if tertiary hospital care must be minutes away: the serious-care plan here is a Puebla or Mexico City run, 4–6 hours by car. Plan for both, as the card says.

Not moving on a pension? There are other routes. The country page separates them — pension, passive income, remote work, family, and long stays — with their limits. Anything unverified is marked as a gap.

Figures: Settled Overseas Mexico fact spine (read 7 Oct 2026): MxMove Oaxaca 2026; LiveAndInvest Oaxaca couple table (total ≈ US$2,460); GoOaxaca 2026. Numbeo samples here run 5–6 contributors — labelled, never printed as standalone statistics.

Healthcare access

Medicare pays $0 in Mexico (Medicare.gov summaries, read 7 Oct 2026); IMSS voluntary cover costs MXN 20,600/yr at ages 60–69 and MXN 21,500 at 70–79 (2026); private cover broadly runs US$2,000–6,000+ per person per year with a reported 20–40% rise in 2026 — and the per-age price table for ages 60–75 remains a printed gap, no insurer-issued table verified yet. Private clinics (San Felipe, Clínica del Valle, Reforma, Molina) plus the public Hospital Civil / Alta Especialidad handle routine and much specialist care; the guide record is plain that major surgery belongs in Puebla or Mexico City, 4–6 hours by car. Write that transfer into the plan before you need it.

Climate, honestly

Highland refuge at 5,100 ft (1,550 m): minimal air-conditioning, a June–September rainy season, minimal hurricane exposure. Altitude is real — the first weeks are an adjustment, and it belongs in the health conversation.

Getting around — and back to the US

Centro is walkable; Oaxaca's airport (OAX) is small — for the US, plan on a connection, usually via Mexico City (checked Oct 2026). The tertiary-care run is Puebla or the capital, 4–6 hours by road.

Expat life & English

A smaller, Spanish-forward foreign-resident scene: the couples who thrive here describe an engaged local life. English exists in the tourist core; clinics, markets and landlords run in Spanish.

Watch-outs

A short city story

Oaxaca's budget maths starts in the markets: a couple eating market-first lands near US$330/mo in groceries, near US$685 with supermarkets and imports (MxMove Oaxaca 2026) — the city's whole value proposition in one line.
