Settled OverseasSomeday Doesn’t Have to Become Never.
Quintana Roo · Couple budget ≈ US$2,000–3,200+/mo — rent takes 40–50%
The Riviera Maya's working city (Playa) and its famous, faster-growing neighbour (Tulum): Caribbean water, a big international population, and Cancún's airport and hospitals up the highway. It fits couples who want the Caribbean with a city's services behind it.
Skip it if rent discipline is the plan: rent takes 40–50% of the budget here, beachfront AC can run to hundreds a month, and Tulum's land-title record is the worst on this page (below).
Not moving on a pension? There are other routes. The country page separates them — pension, passive income, remote work, family, and long stays — with their limits. Anything unverified is marked as a gap.
Figures: Settled Overseas Mexico fact spine (read 7 Oct 2026): ExpatDen Playa del Carmen retirement + cost guides (Sep 2026, listing-based; Numbeo's MXN 18,004 centre 1-bed reads as an outlier against the listings — we print the listing range). 'Tulum ≥ Playa for comparable expat stock' is UNVERIFIED — a gap, not a number.
Medicare pays $0 in Mexico (Medicare.gov summaries, read 7 Oct 2026); IMSS voluntary cover costs MXN 20,600/yr at ages 60–69 and MXN 21,500 at 70–79 (2026); private cover broadly runs US$2,000–6,000+ per person per year with a reported 20–40% rise in 2026 — and the per-age price table for ages 60–75 remains a printed gap, no insurer-issued table verified yet. Playa's private tier (Hospiten, CostaMed) is adequate for emergencies and thinner for complex specialties; Tulum has small clinics only. Cancún — Galenia, Hospiten Cancún — is the hospital hub: ~1 hour from Playa, ~2 hours from Tulum. Mérida is the next tier.
Full Caribbean hurricane exposure June–November: storm surge, flooding and multi-day power-loss risk; heat and humidity year-round, so AC is the budget. Beach quality (sargassum) is not verified to a dated source here — printed as a gap rather than a claim.
Cancún (CUN), the region's US gateway, is ~1 hour from Playa and ~2 from Tulum (new US nonstops still being added for winter 2026–27; checked Oct 2026). West of Highway 307 effectively requires a car; Playa's centre is walkable.
One of Mexico's most international towns: English is deep in Playa's service economy, thinner in Tulum's. The helper and developer economy is intense — the country page's three red flags earn their keep here.
Playa's rent map is a ten-minute drive wide: MXN 6,000–10,000 west of the highway, MXN 20,000–33,000 in Playacar (ExpatDen, Sep 2026, 42 live listings) — same Caribbean, three price bands.

This page is education, built from public sources checked on the dates shown. It is not legal, tax, or medical advice; residency outcomes and underwriting stay with the Mexican consulates and the INM, insurers, and your own licensed advisors. Figures marked with a directory or broker name were read from that source; anything we could not verify is printed as a gap.
