Puerto Vallarta

Jalisco · Couple budget ≈ US$2,200–3,200/mo (fact spine, read 7 Oct 2026)

The Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe at night, Puerto Vallarta

Who picks it — and why

A Pacific resort city with a real Mexican city inside it: good private hospitals, a big English-speaking winter population, and neighbourhoods at every price from modest colonias to the Zona Romántica. It fits couples who want beach-city infrastructure with a hospital tier in town.

Who should skip it

Skip it if seasonal pricing will run your life: high-season short-term rates quietly eat the difference, and Jalisco prints at Level 3. Sign the 12-month lease, or don't do the maths on winter rates.

Not moving on a pension? There are other routes. The country page separates them — pension, passive income, remote work, family, and long stays — with their limits. Anything unverified is marked as a gap.

Figures: Settled Overseas Mexico fact spine (read 7 Oct 2026): CBLaCosta PV 2026; MxMove PV 2026. The '20-minute discount' is real: Versalles/5 de Diciembre rents sit well below the Zona Romántica for the same daily life.

Healthcare access

Medicare pays $0 in Mexico (Medicare.gov summaries, read 7 Oct 2026); IMSS voluntary cover costs MXN 20,600/yr at ages 60–69 and MXN 21,500 at 70–79 (2026); private cover broadly runs US$2,000–6,000+ per person per year with a reported 20–40% rise in 2026 — and the per-age price table for ages 60–75 remains a printed gap, no insurer-issued table verified yet. A good private tier in town (CMQ Premier, Medasist, Hospital Joya / San Javier Vallarta), experienced with foreigners — with a reported habit of direct-billing friction: insist the hospital confirms insurer authorisation, or expect pay-and-claim (resident accounts, read Oct 2026). Serious trauma and major cardiac cases transfer to Guadalajara, ~4–5 hours by road.

Climate, honestly

Pacific hurricane season June–November, peaking around September; Banderas Bay's mountains give partial shelter and direct hits are historically infrequent — but summer humidity peaks near 84% with afternoon deluges. Winter (Dec–Feb) is the marketed climate; May–October is the lived reality check.

Getting around — and back to the US

PVR, the city's own airport, anchors the bay (US/Canada seasonal nonstops; checked Oct 2026). Across the state line, Nuevo Vallarta sits in Nayarit — Level 2, against Jalisco's Level 3: the same bay, two labels.

Expat life & English

One of Mexico's biggest English-speaking seasonal populations; English runs deep in the tourist economy and thins inland. The helper economy (brokers, facilitators) is mature — and the country page's red-flag rules apply with full force.

Watch-outs

A short city story

Puerto Vallarta models cleanly into three lifestyles — modest ≈ US$1,320, comfortable ≈ US$2,535, upscale US$5,230+ (CBLaCosta 2026): the same bay, priced three ways.

This page is education, built from public sources checked on the dates shown. It is not legal, tax, or medical advice; residency outcomes and underwriting stay with the Mexican consulates and the INM, insurers, and your own licensed advisors. Figures marked with a directory or broker name were read from that source; anything we could not verify is printed as a gap.
