Alicante

Valencian Community · Costa Blanca · Couple budget ≈ €2,500–€3,400/mo (late 2026)

Santa Bárbara Castle and the palm promenade, Alicante

Who picks it — and why

The quieter Costa Blanca alternative: big expat services, a real Spanish city underneath, and the island ferry at the port — in the same budget band as Valencia, with a softer landing.

Who should skip it

Skip Alicante if you want Valencia's big-city depth, or if thin data bothers you: independent surveyed couple budgets for Alicante are scarcer than for the other five (see the gap in the snapshot below).

Not moving on a pension? There are other routes. The country page separates them — pension, passive income, remote work, family, and long stays — with their limits. Anything unverified is marked as a gap.

Monthly budget snapshot

Rent, 80 m² flat
≈ €1,000/mo (~€12.6–12.8/m², Sep 2026)
Rent, 1-bed centre
≈ €1,011/mo (Numbeo crowd data, Oct 2026)
Planning band, couple
€2,500–€3,400/mo (country page band)
Utilities, 70–90 m²
€80–€150/mo
Groceries for a couple
€350–€550/mo

The gap we print as a gap: our sources' Alicante couple total (€2,300–€3,100) was interpolated from rent indexes, not surveyed. We plan on the €2,500–€3,400 band and show the difference instead of hiding it.

Figures: Settled Overseas Spain research (fact spine read 7 Oct 2026) plus checks dated Oct 2026, as marked. Anything not verified is printed as a gap.

Healthcare access

Alicante city is on the short list with large public university hospitals plus private groups, and the Costa Blanca is one of the coasts where physician-level English is reliable in private care. Medicare still pays $0 (Medicare.gov, April 2026); Convenio Especial after year 1, €157/mo per person at 65+.

Climate, honestly

Mediterranean Costa Blanca: hot, humid summers in the high 20s–low 30s °C, mild winters by northern standards. Gap: station-level AEMET normals still to be added.

Getting around — and back to the US

Alicante airport (ALC) is one of Spain's busiest leisure gateways inside Europe — but we found no US nonstop (checked Oct 2026; the longest direct links are European), so plan a Madrid or European-hub connection. In town: the island ferry at the port, and a compact centre.

Expat life & English

The Costa Blanca is an established foreign-resident coast: expat services are a local industry. English carries far here — further than anywhere except the Costa del Sol — and daily life still rewards Spanish.

Watch-outs

A short city story

A working port city first and a resort second — the harbour, the island ferry, and the castle-crowned hill above the old town.
